Actually, i dont know , i am so new to macintosh's i sure do love my iBook, but I need to figure some things out, before I can use it professionally.
Three little letters...VLC (direct file link for OS X 10.2.8+)
Some of these moveis are done with obscure codecs, because the codec is open source, some bootlegger thiunks he is more leet for using it...well whatever...copyright infringment is copyright infringement.

QuickTime will take some AVI's, but you'll need to download the DIVX codec to play them. For one's it's finicky with, you can also try DIVX Doctor to repair the audio.
It's generally easier just to use VLC, although VLC is awkward and crash-prone.
