WTF is ATSServer...

...and why is it claiming 94.20% of my CPU?

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0, 4GB RAM, AirPort Extreme, Tiger 10.3.2.

This is the third Power Mac G5 I've had, and once again there are things that just don't behave 'properly'.

I've got ATSServer sitting at the top of my Activity Monitor, Spotlight keeps reindexing external hard drives as their capacities keep changing. AirPort Extreme keeps dropping the connection and then refusing to let me back on to the network, and FontBook is continually switching fonts on and off.

I know the system software is good because I just reformatted and installed in about a week ago, as is Creative Suite 2 and my fonts. I'm sat here wondering why I paid good money for legal software when this setup clearly isn't working.

I'm sick fed up of having to reinstall this machine from scratch every week because something isn't behaving properly.

Would anybody care to hazard a guess as to WTF is going on with this machine?

P.S., I have an iMac G5, Mac mini and 17" Powerbook on the same network and running the same software, and I've never had a single problem with any of them...

Cheers guys...

Yeah I googled it as well, but I'm afraid the results didn't make a lot of sense to me.

I reformatted and reinstalled this morning, and with just the OS installed (no apps yet) the ATSServer is still sitting at the top stealing 51% CPU.

Just how much CPU% should the ATSServer process be grabbing? Is this normal?

At my Ibook ATSServer is making 0,2% prosessor load. So, based on that your numbers seem very high. And that proses is responsible for taking care of fonts, so thats propably the source of your font problems as well.

How many fonts are you managing with FontBook? Maybe FontBook is weirded out because you're trying to manage too many. Try using Linotype's FontExplorer X. It's a freeware application that is susposed to rival commercial software like Suitcase and Font Reserve.

Hi guys, many thanks for taking the time to reply.

I just formatted and reinstalled the OS, so the only fonts which are installed are those installed by the basic operating system. Even with this basic install, ATSServer creeps up to 60%+ CPU. It does this before and after the 10.4.2 update.

The iMac G5 and PowerBook G4 that I have access to are running identical software setups and ATSServer is only consuming nominal CPU%. In fact, I don't think it even appears on the iMac most of the time.

The other strange problem that I have, is that when I go on to install Adobe CS2, it installs several fonts as well. These fonts only show up in the Adobe apps, they don't show up in FontBook or apps like TextEdit.

    If I look in:

    /Library/Fonts

    /User/Library/Fonts

    /System/Library/Fonts

there is no sign of the CS2 fonts, which begs the question, where are they?

    Something fishy going on.

go to daringfireball.net, and search for his post on the same subject. sounds like, if you're doing an archive and install, you're carrying over some bad font cache files.
