complete backup questions

Not sure if this post should go in Apple OS or not...I currently use backup 3 to backup my files onto an external hard drive.

I was wondering a few things:

1. If I do an archive and install of Tiger, will I have to re-install software like Palm Hotsync, Microsoft Word, Photoshop, etc..,? Will my data be archived as well, or will it be fully accessable in the new OS?

2. is there a way to take a "snapshot" of my entire computer system, operating system, and all files etc.., that would be usable to boot from (off of my external drive) in the event of a catastrophic failure of my system? In other words, if something happens, I boot from the external drive and I'm up and running as if I'm back in time to the day I took the "snapshot"?

3. Also, I have a few large video files (dv footage) that run about 7 GB, which is too large for my dvd burner to get all on one DVD. I don't know much about dual layer DVD, except the fact that I don't have it. What's the easiest way to back this up on removable disks? I vaguely remember reading about Roxio Toast being able to separate large files onto more than one disk...is this correct? Is it recommended?

thanks in advance for any advice!

    1. I don't know about, Anyone?

    2. Try Carbon Cloner found here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

    3. Is the DV footage a single file or multiple files? DVD disk spanning can be done in Backup application or Toast 7.
