I recently purchased a used iMac for my daughter. The OS is 10.3.9. I'm having a tough time finding any prek or toddler software that is compatible with this OS. All the software I find is for classic or up to 10.2. Does anyone have any recommendations?

There are quite a lot of good websites, like disney.com and others. I stuck bookmark links in the dock for the kids. KidPix is also great, for a little bit older kid. I think a 3-year-old would enjoy it. And speaking of kidpix, mackiev has some other kids' software. I also had some classic software - I forget what it was now, but I guess that's not what you're looking for anyway.

Broderbund has educational software I used to buy for my niece and she really liked it.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.

Now that I have a pretty goode idea of software selections, I'm placed at another cross road.

Most of the applications require classic mode 8.6, 9.2.1, 10.1.5 and 10.2.3. Since my daughter's iMac is running 10.3.9 should I do the following process?

    1. completely uninstall 10.3.9

    2. install an older OS - say 9.2.1 or 10.1.5

    3. then install 10.3.9 in a separate folder?

    or

    Can I do the following?

    1. keep 10.3.9 installed on the iMac

    2. install an older OS - say 9.2.1 or 10.1.5 in a separate folder?

How do I completely nuke an iMac OS off the harddrive? Which approach should I take? Which older OS is considered classic mode?

First of all, don't wipe your disk. Unless the computer came with a software restore disk or you have an OS X install, you'll be stuck. Classic is anything OS 9.2.2 or earlier. OS 10.1.5 and 10.2.3 are not "Classic" ... they're OS X. They should run on 10.3.9, but of course, there are no absolutes.

You might have Classic already installed, as well. Click on your hard drive icon and if you see a folder labeled "System Folder" with a big 9 on it, then you have a clasic environment available to you. I can't really tell you much more unless I know what kind of processor and iMac you have. Go to the Blue Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and drag down to "About This Mac". Reply here with the processor speed and type and I can offer a little more guidance.

    specs:

    Lime iMac

    10.3.9 Panther OS X

    400 MHZ PowerPC G3

    256MB SDRAM

I've tried to install one of the apps and it prompts me with there is no classic installed. I've got the disks for Panther. I'll have to purchase 9.2.2 or earlier. Is it possible to install 9.2 in a folder in the 10.3.9 system folder? Some thing like?

    10.3.9/system folder/9.2

    10.3.9/system folder/9.2

You'll need a 9.2 disk to install OS 9 into OS X. Otherwise, you have to start all over, clean the HDD and install OS 9, then install Panther over it, so save yourself the headache and find an OS 9.2 disk. I THINK, you should be able to pop the OS 9 disk in the tray and install and it will install in its own system folder on the hard drive

I think you can do that if I remember correctly ... can anyone else confirm this?
