Power management in new PMs?

According to a cNet report (http://news.com.com/IBM+highlights+P...l?tag=nefd.top), the new dual core chips are able to save a lot of energy in several ways (clock down, one core off, etc.). I wonder if OS X is taking advantage of this feature?

It's not new news, but it's a good question. I have thought about this with respects to the matter of Mental Ray in Maya. Without this feature Mental Ray might not work at all on the new macs. Mental ray only supports one processor per-license. A dual core processor would, and is probably be recognized as 2 processors by Mental Ray; therefore it would not render any images without a second license. But as to your first question I don't know if it's done by the OS, or built into the hardware itself.
