Does Limewire beat the crap out of YOUR Mac?
I downloaded and tried out Limewire last night finally. My wife was asking about a certain CD she wanted, but only knew one song off the radio, so I wanted to check it out first. I had been meaning to try Limewire out, so I gave it a shot.
At first, it was awesome! Had that song downloaded in about 5 minutes, and got another song I wanted too, Superman by Five For Fighting. Worked awesome. (I am going out to buy this CD now BTW - d/l a couple other songs, and they sound great)
But man, it crashed the hell out of my G4 800 PowerMac 4 times in one night!! Had it completely freeze up - no mouse movement, couldn't force quit anything, had to hold down the power button and restart it that way. Just brutal.
So basically, I think it's decent (albeit slow) to get the odd MP3 with, but I sure wouldn't use it, or keep it running, for any length of time. And certainly not running in the background while I did anything important with my Mac.
What do you guys thing - you use Limewire much? Seems funny to me it runs like such a dog, since it always tops the C/NET downloads list... hmmm.

I've never had troubles like that with LimeWire on my DP500. Yes, it's a resource hog, but it's never totally locked up the machine. I also do not leave it running constantly on my Mac, rather, only when I want to get something. I close it as soon as it's done so I can have my bandwidth back.
BYW, are you using 2.2.1? It's much better than the previous versions. It's finally replaced my old 1.7 version I'd been keeping around.
Perhaps you should try Aquisition (see <a href="http://www.xlife.org"; target="_blank">www.xlife.org</a> for info). It's a new Cocoa app that runs pretty well and looks like it's got lots of potential.
Seriously. It hadn't crossed my mind.
OS9? Yech.
I'll look into that Java update. It's recent enought that a new PowerMac didn't come with the latest version? Should Software Update be catching this?
