Software update problem

My friend is having problems getting software update to work. It logs on--then quits in the middle of updating--I thought it was related to the strength of the broadband signal, but even with a direct stong internet connection, it fails.

Any suggestions?

    Check the Software Update.log.

    Type "Software Update.log" into Spotlight and double-click the result.
