Using a cable modem with eMac and iBook

I have an eMac with a cable modem connected to it and I also have an iBook. I'd like to be able to use the internet connection I have on both computers and wondered if using an ethernet splitter in the back of the cable modem with two cables coming out of the splitter (one for each computer) would work or if I'd need to get an ethernet hub or something? Can't really afford Airport Express at the moment so looking for a temporary solution!

The "splitter" idea won't work... but for $29 or so, you can get a basic ethernet hub/router. Not wireless, but it's what you need to use both computers at the same time (with the cable.)

Router, as mentioned, is the standard solution.

BUT - if you have a FireWIre cable, see if you can set the eMac to share the ethernet connection through FireWire to the iBook. Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable, open "Network" on the eMac and make sure "FireWIre" is enabled in the Network Port Configurations. Then open "Sharing" and tell it to share the Internet connection FROM built-in ethernet TO built-in FireWire. Then set the iBook to use FireWire.

I never actually tried this, but TCP/IP over FireWire is supposed to work.
