Safari and Online Banking

I have three bank accounts in the UK - savings, current account and a joint account with my wife. They are all with different banks.

Why is it that in the past three months each bank has abruptly refused access to the Safari browser but granted access to Mac Users using Camino, Opera etc....

My suspicion is that it is an IT department thing but is there something in Safari that renders it unsecure?

Well Camino is built on mozilla so they just test for that. I have no idea on Opera. Top 3 browsers are IE, Mozilla derivatives, Safari though. If you want the mac market you really should support safari too.

Banking and browsers are my single biggest issue with the internet. Spam, pop-ups, the odd web based incompatibility, these I can live with. But Banking?!

For various reasons I need regular online access to three different Banks - First Direct, Citibank and Nationwide. I don't have a single browser that will support all 3 banks. Safari can only cope with Nationwide. Opera fails for Citibank, but OK the other 2. Nationwide will actually crash Firefox (when choosing the drop down menus for the login). I forget which one IE fails with.

    Worth trying Camino?

    Segovious,

I'll try that, but not sure it will help. Safari can login quite happily to Citibank, but all the subsequent menu items are squashed into a single screen position so I can't actally do anything.

Not that I actually know what you mean - I'm assuming Safari has a debug menu somewhere and when I choose/open it I'll see reference to user-agent.

    Cheers,

As far as i can tell, i have never had a problem with Commerce Bank and Safari. That was actually one of the many (including Free ATMs and reimbursed surcharges) that i switched from Wachovia to Commerce.

When I switched to the Mac there were banks that I couldn't work with. I simply wrote them an email, advising them of the fact and also the fact that people who buy Macs comprise about 15% of consumer users and pay more for Macs than those that buy cheapo computers. Also noted that Safari used internet standards so there should be no problems if their site adhered to those standards. Now I can use Safari on all bank sites I need in the US and Australia.
