Outlook Express Freeze

I am using Outlook Express 5.03 on a G4 with OS 9.2.2. Sometimes, but not always, when I am connected to the internet and I click on the 'send & receive' button or use the keystroke 'command m' the whole machine freezes and I have to restart by pressing the button on the front of the Mac. Any ideas what could be causing this?
