Busted harddrive, iTunes songs gone for good?
(Mods, not sure if this belongs in Genius Bar or iTunes forum)
Yes, yes, I should have backed it all up. But I didn't and am thus asking the question:
My harddrive is toast. Click of death and all that. I hadn't backed up my iTunes songs and now, of course, they're gone. On my new drive after installing iTunes I tried Advanced -> Check for purchases only to be met with "Purchased music can only be downloaded once." Suggestions? Will the good people at Apple help me out? Do I sigh, call it character building and spend my money again?

i had a bunch of CDs with me that got destroyed by the weather, and I downloaded the songs from P2P and re-burned discs to replace my old ones. Seems like the same sort of thing.

if when you purchase a song, you are purchasing the right to use that song, wouldn't it be perfectly legal to download the songs from a P2P service or rip them from a friend's or borrowed CD?

Aren't you the guy who had the moral dilemma about P2Ping Tiger when you had already bought it in the States? How is this different? It seems perfectly analagous, and as I remember, you got the US Embassy involved to palliate your conscience.

First, call the support for the iTMS. Despite what the site says, they have been known to make exceptions for good customers who ask politely.
As far as the rest of the data, DriveSavers can get it, but it costs a fortune.

wow, didn't expect that reply. i had tiger sent over using an embassy pouch, which is basically just having something that will be used for 'official business' (as it is being used during working hours) sent circumventing the local mail system (prone to tiger-losing corruption). not particularly relevent to this thread. uh, i didn't really make that connection, but i do see your point. guess you got me.

It wasn't my intention to 'get you' nor to sound like a dick (although it seems I inadvertently did both). In your thread you seemed to be struggling with the same solution that you offered rentedmule, that's all. You refused to consider downloading Tiger illegally even if you paid for it in some indirect manner. Just wondering what had changed. This guy doesn't have a pouch that'll bring back the songs he legally purchased, and so I imagine he's feeling the dilemma a bit more acutely.

Nope, no iPod, though I'm hoping my father-in-law springs for one for Christmas. I was able to find four or five CDs with some of my stuff on them. But given that I've dumped a couple of hundred dollars into iTunes (what can I say, I'm impulsive) most of it is gone. Truly a painful, but I suppose useful lesson in the importance of backing your stuff up. I am going to call iTMS Monday and see if I can sweet talk them, though. I'll let you know how it goes.
Any luck with that? I am about to burn a back up of my Tunes.
