Hi.. stupid question bit my iPod (video) just took a soaking, and now the hard drive seems to be on the way out.

It's a long shot but any ideas?

It's been opened up and in the airing cupboard, all seems dry. It was booting ok but taking ages to access the disk for some files.. I have tied a reset using iPod Updater and it just hangs about a quarter way through.

I'm guessing it's buy a new one from apple time (or claim on the household insurance)

but if you guys have any other ideas it would be much appreciated.

I thought this was a thread about a Moist iPod, like a U2 iPod. Moist was a Canadian rock band.

But uh sorry bout your ipod.

Does your insurance have a deductable, and if so, is it less than buying a new iPod?

You're saying you didn't get the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod? Hmm...

Perhaps seek an Apple authorized repair center nearby? If you have an Apple Retail Store nearby, you could bring it in and have them take a gander at the poor baby.

Would applecare protect against stupidity ?

I thought it was just manufacturing faults.

You said it's a video iPod, right? So, since they're still quite new to the market, yours should still be covered by the one year warranty. I don't see why they wouldn't help you out in some way; they should expect accidents like these would happen to an iPod. I heard from yourmaclife.com that a guy brought in his damaged iPod to an Apple Retail Store and got it replaced.

depends on how "visible" the user's fault was. they do say in the instructions in pan-linguistic iconography "do not get this thing wet", so if they can tell it was wet (like you dropped it in a river and thee are little debris bits stuck to the internals), then i do believe you're screwed. if you got it wet in the rain or clean tap, it's PROBABLY not visible to the naked eye, but i have no idea how closely apple's repair techs check these things out.

in the end, apple's warranty is just that, a warranty, NOT insurance. i have been meaning to look into personal tech insurance for some time now for just such problems, but i am never sure where to look to find a reasonable policy.

Is Apple still doing the 'Bring your iPod in for any reason whatsoever and we will replace it' thing? If so, you could say it broke for no apparent reason, honest guv, it did.

I remember Moist, they had one song that got played over here in the UK, 'Push', I think it was, it was a black and white video.

sigh, you guys do realize that just playing dumb to get an new ipod sends costs back onto those people who actually don't mess up their ipods and actually are honest with their repairs and replacements?

don't get me wrong, years ago, i did what you recommend. but i've had enough years between then and now to know that, if you take your ipod for a bath, well, you broke it. yes, it sucks. and you've got to buy a new one or pay through the nose to geta new one. but that's how it's supposed to work.

plus, Jpsilvashy, a.) spellcheck is your friend b.) URLs work better when you don't leave a trailing comma in them c.) gee, nice to see napster's rolling out the blatant t & a to get subscribers.. real high class. thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys, I don't think playing dumb would have worked, with big bubbles of water under the screen.

Anyway I took it apart, and I mean totally apart. There are some very thin plastic films behind the screen to defuse the backlight, they had water trapped in between so they had to be dried and cleaned.

Luckily none of the electronics got wet (went in screen down). The hard drive had a little freak out when i re-assembled it but a re-format seems to have fixed that.

so other than the scuffing from me opening he case there seems to be no Ill effects.

I guess time will tell on the battery which is behind the screen. Hopefully it will last long enough to get me to 6G models being released.

Sorry sir, i didnt realize that this was such a high-class computer forum, you appear to be as high class as it gets. I am sorry to inform you that spell check is not my friend. I have real friends and like women. I will refrain from having a life now.

That's a great attitude to have. First, you'll immediately lose the respect of EVERYONE here. Second, you'll contribute to the *next* iPod you buy being more expensive. You're screwing yourself...sucka.

Ladies Ladies, there is no need for this kind of behavior.

It was quite a nice little thread until about 4 posts ago.
