Appleworks suckz!?

Why? Click on the red close box of an MS Word X document you have just have edited and what happens? A save dialogue 'sheet' slides down neatly from the top of the document, just like it's supposed to in OS X. Do the same on an Appleworks 6 document and what happens? An old style 'save changes' dialogue appears. No sheet. WTF?! This is in-house Apple software and they're not using their own OS technology! Apple not eating its own dog food in Stevo's immortal phrase? It happens - Quicktime 5 in Classic still doesn't use Navigation Services....

starfleetX thinks that AppleWorks is the worst carbonized piece of shit to come from Cupertino, CA, USA. The Finder comes a close second, but AW takes the gold. starfleetX is surprised that The Blue Meanie would bring up this topic because the poor port of AppleWorks is a very well known subject among most Apple users in this online community.

torifile is sick of MS word's antics. What with it thinking it's smarter than he and with AW too dumb to tie a pair of velcro shoes he's gone in search of the coveted "Word Processor that doesn't suck." So far he thinks an app with a name that would be more appropriate for an anime character with a musical bent is showing promise. But he's a little scared of writing a paper that's due in 12 hours in an app that is at version 0.3.1d stage will be more of a pain in the ass than using MS Word on windows ME would be. What to do, what to do... Damn it, Apple, fix AW already!!!

Well, soz, Starfleet, but The Blue Meanie hasn't seen any of these other threads on the topic. Anyway, there's nothing like a good rant to get these things out of your system

Which app has this name that would be "appropriate for an anime character with a musical bent"? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

And another thing - it insists on saving files with a ".cwk" suffix. Try saving a file without the suffix and it will add it back the next time you open the file

And another thing - recently edited documents are annoyingly listed in alphabetical, not chronological order.

Anyone heard anything about AW 7?

I suppose this is a bit of a stretch, but torifile, you might try installing XFree86 for darwin ( fink.sourceforge.net ) and try WPs like abiWord or something.

    <a href="http://abisource.com/download/index.phtml?all=1"; target="_blank">http://abisource.com/download/index.phtml?all=1</a>;

I use it all the time, and have no complaints. I also installed it on my roomates Wintel P.O.S. and she likes it too.

I've never used fink, or OSX for that matter, so I count vouch for how well they play together.

<a href="http://www.okito.net"; target="_blank">Okito Composer</a>. I've been using it all night and it hasn't once tried to insist that I change my font because it knows I want a different style for my next paragraph. It has some promise...

As for abiword and Xfree... I've tried out fink and the install seems painless enough, but it seems to do some funky things to my mysql installation and I'm not savvy enough to figure it out. I also don't know what kind of printing issues will come up and I'm a procrasinator, so I don't have the time to mess with it...

[edit: It's amazing how forgetting a "not" in a statement changes its meaning so much...]

the only reason Word works better is becasue the MacBU at MS depends on making a quality product to sell more. Whomever the AW engineers are, they just work interanlly and dont seem to give a damn. Zo thinks they should be made semi-independent again and make them feel the heat if they dont come out with quality products. They are like the post office workers or other state branch where once you have a job, its for life and you basically dont have to work more than average.

Zo thinks they are lazy gits.

Actually kelib would love the idea of getting MS-Works for the Mac again. kelib never uses MS Office on his PC (But he does so on his Macs). MS-Works has all the features he needs, plain and simple

AW6 came out when Carbon was barely stable enough for release - no, scratch that, when it wasn't quite stable enough for release. Carbon didn't know what sheets were yet.

I expect that AW 7 will be a much more OS X-savvy application. If it's not, Apple will hear about it.

At least AW6's scripting engine rocks. They got something right...

I think it was about year and half ago Steve was asked at an educational conference about some AppleWorks improvements. He replied in a simple way: You will be very happy very soon. Nothing has happened since though

Jonathan thinks OkitoComposer needs 3 things to become his word processor of choice:

    1. Nicer icons, both for the app and the toolbar. Hire MichaelM8000 or something.

    2. MS Word file format read/save capabilities.

    3. French dictionary of some sort. (Ok, it can become my WP of choice without this, but, it would be nice...)

It's clean, It's simple, it's Office compatible, and last but not least, it's pleasure to work on. A package of MS Works along with Word would be a massive hit on the Mac
