Do you think the next generation of Apple proApps (Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro,Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Logic Pro & Shake) will have the same GUI than Aperture?

I really like the new aperture GUI and how it manage dual screens and the full screen mode; hopefuly all other proApps will get the same GUI

I certainly hope Logic Pro gets a new GUI. It's so un-Apple. If you showed be Logic and ProTools and I didn't know who made what, I would swear that ProTools was the one made by Apple.

Logic is wonderful in so many ways, but Apple inherited a huge amount of bloat when they bought it. I kind of wish they would strip it down and re-write it.

Right on. Logic's interface is atrocious, and about as un-mac like as it can get. I describe it as an interface only a German could love (it was developed in Germany). If you REALLY want to see a great interface, look at Digital Performer. Still don't understand why they weren't bought by Apple. However, ProTools still rules, and I use logic over DP because of the built in instruments (Which should be AU plugs dammit)

Yeah, they probably will. All the video-based pro apps share the same underlying GUI framework. Aperture probably shares this, so similar features will probably be in the next versions of FCP, DVDSP, Motion, Compressor, Soundtrack, and LiveType.

Similarly, new apps in iWork (spreadsheet? database?) should look very much like Pages and Keyword.

Seems like Apple has at least 3 levels of app GUIs:

    iLife

    iWork

    Pro apps

I like the iWork GUI, it's simple but get the work done!

No offense intended Germans are known for their exacting engineering skills, and I just think that the Logic UI is built in that mind set. You literally have to define your studio environment, and then link your tracks to that. It is far more complicated than every other audio app I've used. It allows for very exacting control, but creates a headache for most others.

i've become convinced that gone are the days of the GUI enforcers on apple's campus to make sure everyone is in-step. sure, they all come close to each other, but the different app teams are separate enough that while they get MOST of the stuff right, they'll also fly off in their own direction. a few consumer examples:

    - itunes new quasi-borderless metal interface

    - the quicktime 7 still brushed interface (you'd think they'd be closer in style, since they both manage playback of media)

    - most apps have their toolbar across the top of the main window, but iphoto and ical have theirs along the bottom...

    - the finder, for some reason, still sports two completely separate looks, with a toggle button available on every window. is there no happy medium? and do people really need to switch it so often that the preference toggle for the style needs to be on EVERY window?

    - safari, which is yet another variant of the brushed metal look... kinda not quite as pudgy as the finder or quicktime, but not as lean as itunes, either.

i mean, seriously, this is just off the top of my head. all of these teams are basically taking cues from each other, but are very self-contained int heir gui directions. long dead are the days when you could count on someone at apple telling a particular team "um, no, you can't put that widget there... we have rules for this sort thing." so while, yes, i think you'll see aperture's interface migrate to all of the other pro apps, the aperture 1.0 interface will make it into the logic and final cut apps when aperture has finally made it to version 2 or 3, and even then, there will be some holdover elements from the previous versions of those apps so as not to alienate any regular users of those apps.

certainly not as bad as the "do whatever you want" guidelines of windows, of course.

Its interesting the GUI debate with apple. Delicious Library really showed what amazing GUI design can be and now that half of the founding DL team is work at apple who is to say what can happen.. FCP HD GUI is a joke. There is so much disparity with the GUI standards at apple. I guess it all comes down to taste but the GUI is not where I for one would like to see it go.. Havent played with apperture but if its based around the GUI of dashboard I think its a step in the right direction.
