It is said that the next version of napster will be available Q1 2006 for those of you into legal fileshare, I got my eyes on napster though, despite their raunchy TV ad (which i also have my eyes on) Of BTW if you havent seen the AD which airs in the US in a week and a half. here it is www.getthewholething.com. All i want is a dependable, LEGAL, p2p solution for my powerbook.

Napster 2.0 has nothing to do with file sharing.

Why do you care for it to be P2P?

Why would you want to pay for p2p when you can geti it free with Acquisition?

Unless you don't buy CD's anymore, then I can understand.

Poisoned is awesome. It searches about four different P2P networks.

Doesn't that ad straddle the line (pardon) of false advertising? They're comparing the free 30-second previews on iTMS to the full-length tracks on Napster that you need to pay at least $10/month to listen to. If you do not choose a monthly subscription from Napster, but buy your music a la carte only, you get - wait for it - free 30-second previews.

$10/month doesn't even let you transfer your music to an mp3 player. You need to either pay $15/month, or purchase the songs at 99c each, to do that. I guess they're trying to be all things to all people, but unless you're one of the few people who hates Apple enough to not want an iPod, I don't see the appeal.

Edit: As should be clear, the "new" Napster has nothing at all to do with P2P, and everything to do with a music conglomerate whoring out the Napster name for their own subscription service. The same music conglomerate, not incidentally, that sued Napster into oblivion and bought rights to the name as part of the settlement. Napster was awesome. But it is no more.

Oh yea by the way, at least Napster is upfront, Apple lies to you. Did you know that all of you guys that "purchased" your songs from Apple through iTunes dont actually own them? you leased them from Apple, at anytime they or the RIAA decide it to be illigal, you must remove all the music you downloaded or it to is illigal. With napster you can only have 5,000 at a time but you actually dont own them either... now that i think of it, you dont even own the music on the CD's you have, you only have the right to listen to it from the CD, The CD you actually own, its the same thing, only a vessel to hold music, just like an iPod, a record, and a radio, all of which can play music, you never infact own a single track. Read Apples end user agreement, you will see that you dont own any of the songs, and can only burn them on to 10 CD's which have to be audio CD r/w's in fact.

    Now what punk?

Calling music bought from Apple not even owned is hilarious when you compare it to Napster, but hey.

I feel I'll have to quote some Sublime to explain my stance on digital music:

As long as I'm alive / I'm gonna live illegal.

And yes, the Napster ad is definitely a clever portrail of truths. You have to pay to get Napster music period, let alone any kind of preview, while on the iTMS, previews are free.

Because the music, just like with iTMS, comes from a central repository, not from peers.
