HD Icon Canges Location on Desktop

I've got a bit of a strange problem. The icon for my hard drive doesn't want to stay in the upper right hand corner. When I shut down my computer and re-start it, that same hard drive icon will sometimes appear behind my dock on the bottom of the screen. Currently I am not using the sort feature as I'm grouping various files on my desktop for a project. So, I know you can "sort by type, name..." bla, bla, bla. Any suggestions as to why this might be happening?
