5.1 surround sound on my mac

i am wanting to buy a 5.1 speaker system for my mac and wanted to check with the genius's out there if it's possible.

i have a dual 2.7 powermac and as far as i'm aware it comes with an non factory upgradable soundcard. i checked the system preferences and it says it only has 2 channels. can a powermac drive a 5.1 system out of the box or am i going to have to buy a special soundcard that is 5.1 compatable.

i use my mac as my main entertainment unit. i live in a small apartment so it's my music station, my tv with eyetv and my 23inch screen so it will be great to watch DVD with surround sound.

any help will be great - thanks!

The optical audio out supports 5.1 and more. You can use that. Otherwise, your headphone port only supports 2 channels max.
