If I use Migration Assistant to transfer applications and files to a new Mac, can I copy only the specific applications I need? I don't need all the rubbish I installed on my old computer!

Also, does MS Office copy OK?

the windows .exe apps wont work on a mac anyway(only if you have VirtualPC). so just transfer your documents and mail and multimedia or whatever else you can transfer

You should be able to transfer just what you'd like to have on your new computer, and assuming that you have MS Office for Mac that will transfer just fine as well. Just one of many many advantages OS X has over XP is the ablility to drag and drop apps.

There may have been some confusion here - I am not a switcher

I was just wondering whether my whole Applications folder would get moved or if I could choose the specific applications.

You may just have to try it. Most of us don't use it often enough to remember all the details. I'm sure you can always back out if it doesn't seem to be fitting your needs.

Having said that, I found it very useful in following up a clean install - as I remember, it knows that the new install has the newer apps, so it won't just copy the whole Applications folder.

Or you could delete the unwanted apps from the source machine before doing the transfer. OR afterwards from the destination machine.

The Migration Assistant will move programs from your old Applications folder to your new one without overwriting the newer programs (Safari, iChar, iMovie, iSync, etc).
