hey all,

my eMac seems to only like burning at 4x. I have plenty of RAM and make sure i don't have any excess applications open. I've tested it with Toast and iTunes.

It's not the CDs (although they are low-quality) as i've tested them in my mother's iMac and had no problems.

If anyone can help, that'd be great thanks.

If your drive's speed is 4x, then it will only burn at 4x.

As already mentioned, drive burn speed and RAM are two completely different things. Are you burning a DVD instead of a CD? A DVD has 6 times more storage than a CD, so a 1X DVD is actually equivalent to a 6X CD in terms of data rate. You might be used to very high burn speeds of CDs (up to 52X). DVDs have a lower X rating, but nearly equivalent data rates.

It could be needing a firmware upgrade too... I have some DVDs that I can burn up to 8X on my Powermac, but my Powerbook only burns the same discs at 2X, even though it is capable of 8X burning. Othere DVDs work fine, but this Princo one is slow for some reason.

Try some different media, that might be the cause of your problem also.
