iMac G5 20" on its way!

So I finally decided to just do it. We had three laptops in the house after I got a Wintel from work, so I decided to sell my Powerbook and buy an iMac G5.

It should arrive tomorrow from Amazon. The best part was I'm using the $150 mail-in rebate and not paying sales tax, which puts the price under Apple's educational discount. I got the 20" G5...standard config. I'll add another 1GB of RAM at some point soon.

I checked the iMac out in person at the King of Prussia Apple store. I agree with some previous poster's comments...the 20" is far superior to the 17"...especially in terms of the screen itself. After I saw it, there was no question.

The PowerBook is on eBay if anyone is interested. 15" 1.25ghz 80GB 5400rpm 1GB with Brenthaven case and Lap Logic Pad....AppleCare until 12/12/06. I don't want to turn this post into a sales pitch, so I'll give you the item # instead of posting a link. Item #5846140751

Looking forward to my iMac. I'll have a full report. (Also going out to get my 60GB iPod today at the Apple Store. I love Apple gift cards!!)

In paper at least, the 20" iMac has a screen that bests even the Cinema Displays. I don't know if it makes some difference in practice though.

You're going to be very happy with it. I ordered mine a week or two after the release, and am thrilled with it.

It does seem do get a little choppy at times as I switch back and forth between Illustrator and Photoshop though, which is my biggest (although still slight) dislike.

I find it's black levels to be very deep; the best I've ever had. This is excellent for my designs, but also when watching DVDs and such.

Frontrow can be a bit unresponsve at times, which is obviously more a product of that feature than the computer itself. I haven't pushed the graphics to an significant extent, so don't have much comment there.

This could be a RAM issue. How much of it do you have?

OK, it is not RAM. It is weird however that, even with such a massive amount of RAM, you still see delays in application switching. Do you believe this is particular to those two Adobe apps or do you see it with others too?

There are also other factors to consider. After some heavy usage of graphics applications, you could find the RAM being eaten alive and the computer starting paging out, even if it is 2.5 GB. Is this perhaps your case?

iMac arrived today and I'm typing from it now. All I can say is "WOW."

The screen is effing amazing. I almost feel like I need to turn DOWN the brightness....even after calibrating it to correct for gamma.

The miggration was easier than I could imagined. Took about 30 minutes. I only have to reregister on app so far...and that's the pain in the ass Sibelius (always happens on a reinstall of that app).

I am still getting used to using a mouse after about 5 years on a trackpad. The mighty mouse does seem to be a little quirky It seems to jump around here and there...but that might be because I am not using a pad.

Now I'm updating software. Interesting...it shipped with 10.4.2 (from Amazon). I'll report back on my other findings. So far though, this thing is nearly perfect.

Most probably. I find the Apple optical mouse system a little picky on surfaces on which other mice work fine. I am not sure though if Apple uses the same system in every mouse category.

you're actually not the first i have heard mention this. if you find it at all bothersome, there is a shareware app out there that allows you to crank the screen brightness/contrast down further than the mac os will. i wish i could remember the name... my searches on versiontracker are coming up blank, though.

but as long as your blacks are not experiencing any bleedthrough* you should be okay for good color

*find a way to display all black on your screen in a dark room -- i use my photoshop-with-no-palettes-and-black-background-with-a-black-image-full-screen-view" trick... if there's still "light" coming from your screen, you have bleedthrough, which isn't supposed to be there. there are probably easier ways to test that, but that's the method i use.

It only happens when switching from Photoshop to Illustrator. Never in the reverse, and never with any other apps.

Oh, that's good. It is a sure indication that there is nothing wrong with your machine or your Tiger installation. I guess you will have to live with that then.
