so whats the estimated pricing for mactels, or at least what do you think theyll be? (since intels will be supposivly cheaper costing than PPC)do you think theyll just remain the same price but with added features or what? thanks in advance
Apple will try for the same price points they have today: Mac mini from $499 to $699, iBook from $999 to $1399, Powerbook from $1499 to $3000, iMac from $1299 to $2200 and Power Mac from $1999 to $3000+.
There may be room for one or two lines of Macs inbetween those price points though, or the extension down or up of an existing line, such as an $800 iBook or Mac mini, or maybe a $999 iMac.
Apple will try for the same price points they have today:
That a definite statement or an educated guess?
I feel they will try to drop a tiny bit. Obviously not a lot. I definitely don't see the mac mini changing in price but I definitely see the powerbooks and powermacs pricing lowering. Just a guess... they will be getting the processors cheaper so why not?
Guess of course. Err, it's a definitive prognostication!

I left room for new price points, did I not? Ie, iBook at $800 and iMac at $1000. The Mac mini can maybe grow to $799.
The Mac mini I don't see changing price really. I think the $499 price point is a (psychological) magic price point that Apple won't move away from, and I don't think there is any defeaturing left for Apple to move to the next magic price point of $399. The only place they have left to defeature is going from the onboard AGP Radeon graphics to Intel GMA. I can't imagine the 1.25 GHz G4 and Intrepid chipset costing much more than $80 combined. Not much room to go down without losing margin.
So, cross those fingers for 1.4 to 1.6 GHz Celeron-M (90 nm, 1 MB L2, 400 MHz FSB) CPUs to be used in the Intel Mac mini. I would simply be amazed if it was something else (such as Pentium M) or something better. Actually, a Celeron-M with dedicated, but cheap, 64 MB CoreGraphics/Video chipset could be just as good as Pentium-M with Intel GMA in some ways.
I can see iBooks definitely moving down to $799, at least EDU versions, but the cost will be defeaturing from dedicated graphics to Intel GMA, maybe even no wireless, maybe even Celeron-M. I don't think there is anyway around it. Apple will use 1.4 to 1.6 GHz Dothans, and have dedicated graphics for the $999 to $1399, $1499 versions.
Powerbooks will use 1.67 Yonah CoreSolo and 1.67-1.83 CoreDuo Yonah CPUs, but to get dual-core, it'll cost $1999+. Low end would be 1.67 GHz CoreSolo with 128 MB Radeom 9700 graphics or Nvidia equivalent (optimistic) at $1499. Top end will be 1.83 GHz CoreDuo for $2799. Why only 1.83 GHz? Because Apple wants its Powerbooks to be thin, thin, thin! I can easily see Jobs screaming this everytime he sees a Mac laptop prototype. Maybe 2 or 2.16 GHz if they have a good cooling solution. I'd give it a %35 chance for 2 GHz Yonahs.
With the recent updates, it looks like the iMacs and Power Macs will wait for Merom, Conroe or Woodcrest CPUs in the Summer or Fall 06.
I'm feeling pretty confident that Apple will use Celeron-M and Pentium-M CPUs in its low-end systems actually. There is a reason why Apple is telling developers that Apple Intel systems will at minimum have Intel CPUs with SSE2 instructions.
Guess of course. Err, it's a definitive prognostication!

Heh got a little ahead of myself :P

I definitely don't see that happening. I mean they are putting wireless in PDA's now. Its expected from portables.

This is the part that I found most interesting. So you feel apple will not move up at all in the graphics world on their laptops? Thats pretty sad since the last 4 revs of powerbooks have had ATI 9700s. *shrugs* could be right...but they would be behind the times with the 6800Go being released and the ATI 9800 mobile being out forever. I really don't care about cpu clock speed... but I'd at least like an improvement in graphics.
The price of the current 14" iBooks are the same as what I paid for mine 26 months ago, but they blow mine out of the water which is why I think the price(s) will be the same, but I do think they will drop in price by the 2006 holiday season.
I am less worried about the price than I am about whether Apple will used integrated grapics and Celeron processors. If either of these two things are used in the model I am thinking of buying then I will have to look at the PowerBooks, which I do not want to do because I have no need of the "professional/power" features nor the price that comes with them.

Thats a good point troberts...
I can't imagine apple using celeron processors to be completely honest with you. I have a feeling that the ibooks will use something like the centrino pentiums and leave the yonahs for the powerbooks. Apple has always laughed at celerons.... it would be very hypocritical for them to use them
I think Apple will try to give us the best possible prices they can. It's their debut on intel, and they will instantly be compared with intel based systems. I think the Mac MIni will probably get cheaper (cost less/more power) And the iMac will also get a better pricing. Probably not a lot, but enough to make people take notice.
Why? A top-of-the-line Quad Dell is at least $4,500.
No kidding. You can't compare workstation class computers with standard comsumer based machines, and put price in there as a factor. If your buying a workstation you need Power, and Performance. Not "Tastes Great - Less Filling".
