most '.mpg' files are either mpeg1 or mpeg 2; neither format is supported by the video ipod. Use quicktime pro or podner to convert the files. both apps are relatively cheap, and worth the money (espcially podner).

MPEG Streamclip opens up virtually all QT Pro functionality and more for free. Also has presets when exporting in .mov or .mp4 for iPods. If you want to work with .vob files you'll need the MPEG-2 playback component though.
I just wish it had a bit rate calculator for rough video bit rate suggestions.
