up to this point, is linux catching up to MS Winders?
will linux take over Winders as the dominant OS for PC's?
There are differant areas that need consideration: allow me to break it down.
For basic home users: any major distro would be as good or better than windows because there is no virus/spyware to worry about (so long as they dont run as root all the time, which most distros disurage and try to make hard for a reason -- you dont need to touch it if you are not a pro) OO and firefox/thunderbird cover most of what basic home windows users do and then some.
For home power users: Video and photo managment are getting there, OSS is hobbling along here, we cant get tthe big vendors like Adobe/Macromedia to sell us the consumer suites (PSE and Premere elements make two good examples).
Media pro/prosumer/hobbyist: Right now, the Mac is a no brainer
Business: There are a few key elements missing: we need good charting software, I have yet to see anything that holds a candle to Visio.
OOo needs a lot of work before it is ready to be put into practice in large scales. Look for this to happen in the next two years as sun gets more serious
Backend servers: Linux is a no-brainer unless you need a propriatery app like Apples xgrid or Exchange on the windows side.
Appliances/embedded: Linux and custom OSs will win the day here.
Linux on the desktop in a meaningfull way is seeable, but I would guesstimate that it is about two to three years off heres why:
A: upgrade cycles are gettting longer
b: few people will adopt windows vista outside of bundling for a year or so to ensure reliability, at this point linux could be deceloped a lot more with Novell and Redhat competeing for the corprate eye.
C: Corprate leads home, people bought windows because they used it at the office, this could happen again with Mac or linux (although Apple doesnt take business seriously so it likely will not be them).
