Is the MBP a realistic desktop replacement?

I am a graphic designer who uses CS2 almost exclusively.

For a while now, I've wanted to replace my PM G5 with a laptop. I'd love to be able to unplug my 30" display and take my Mac and all my files with me, rather than having to constantly juggle all my files and email across two machines (iSync DOESN'T work in real life).

My PB 17" just isn't up to the task ? it's no where near fast enough to be used as an everyday workhorse. I suspect a lot of it has to do with the 2.5" HDD.

But if the MBP is 4x as fast as the PB, I'm wondering if I'll finally be able to realise by plans? Any guesses as to whether the MBP will be up to the job?

Once the apps your need are native it will be fine as a desktop replacement.

I'm thinking that they will debut a 17" model soon or wait for Merom which is definitely a desktop replacement kind of CPU.
