Disclaimer....Though I have a couple of synths I'm not much of a synth guy. More a guitarist who dabbles. If I was going to spend under a grand on a new synth I'd probably look at a Nord Lead 2X and the Korg Triton LE. You might want to search for reviews at Sound on Sound You will not be able to access the most recent reviews, but it's probably been awhile since they reviewed those two and they might not have reviewed those exact models.
I personally think the Korg would probably be better suited to soundtrack work, but the Nord would be more fun to make noise on. If you don't want to spend too much right now you might want to just get a cheap controller keyboard maybe something by M-Audio that has no sounds built in but that you can use to control software synths. There's lots of great software out there and Garageband and the low end Logic come with software synths.
I recently purchased the m-audio 88es. 88 keys!! but after about an hour of using it the middle E key stopped working...I ended up returning it the next day.
that got me to thinking about what kind of keyboard I really wanted to get. the sounds were pretty good when the m-audio was connected with garageband and the keys were cool because they were semi-weighted but it wasn't the same as when I was fiddling with the Korg oasys or the triton extreme at the store...
and I like the idea of having a keyboard with the sound s on it in case I ever had to play it at a gig or whatever...
so basically I'd like the best of both worlds...a keyboard I could use at gigs that I could also use for soundtrack work...
Would the investment be better to get a mis to higher-end keyboard??
