Simple file server v. NAS for home network

I am planning an upgrade to my home network, including adding file storage. I want to use one of two options: an NAS device, such as the Buffalo Linkstation ($220 for 250 GB); or a simple file server running OSX (probably a pre-owned G4 tower with a bunch of drives in it ($450 + cost of HDD's)).

Is a 400 mhz G4 with 512 MB of RAM enough for a simple file server? I will be using it mainly for music and video, and for backups. I want to stay with OSX (as opposed to Linux or other OS's).

Any pro's/cons to either set-up? This is my first experience with either type of setup, so any input would be greatly appreciated.
