Why do you have to buy the mpeg-2 component?

Also, if you have quicktime Pro why isn't this mpeg-2 component a part of it???

This has been discussed ad nauseum. Apple Computer does not own the MPEG-2 codec and has no right to give it away. The MPEG-2 QuickTime codec is the property of Sorensen. Sorensen sets the conditions on its use. FWIW, one of those conditions is that it can be used only with the QuickTime Player. Other codecs may be used with any QuickTime-compatible app.

I believe VLC can play mpeg-2 content. And it's free.

XinePlayer can play them as well. It has a better interface than VLC and is based on Xine, the open-source mature multimedia engine.

    Give it a try.

I did, and it didn't seem to want to play sound on any of the video files I had laying around. Any thoughts?
