What Happened to My Songs???

Hey there,

After a good run with my 4th Gen iPod, I decided to get the new 5th Gen. It came in the mail yesterday and today while searching for a song, I noticed something strange.

The way I search for music on my iPod is by going to Music / Artist instead of through Music / Songs, well, I noticed on some artists, the iPod would skip the screen that lists artists albums and just pull up the screen that lists songs in a particular album. I double checked against my iTunes and it appears that it does this for songs I have not listed albums for.

For example ... Hendrix. I have 3 Hendrix songs on my iPod (All Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze and Somewhere over the Rainbow) Purple Haze and All Along the Watchtower were straight from my CD collection (100 Greatest Rock Songs), but somewhere over the rainbow was sent to me by a friend. There's no album listed, in iTunes for it. When I go to my iPod to select "Rainbow", I navigate to Music / Artists / Jimi Hendrix, and after I press his name, poof, I go straight to the 100 Greatest Rock Songs screen.

This rather odd I think. It's like that for a few other artists I have too. This kinda worries me because the old iPod I had didn't do that, and if I navigate to Music / Songs and scroll all the way down, I can find Hendrix's "Rainbow" right there? So, anyway, I hope somebody has some ideas. I called Apple Tech Support today so I can get my money;s worth out of the free 90 day phone support. Their solution - erase all the music from my iMac G5, erase and restore the iPod software, then reimport all of my music from the CD's (about 3000 songs) ... needless to say, I thought that was a bit ridiculous.

Thanks for any insight you have!

Chris

The iPods should behave almost identically as long as you have all the settings configured the same. I would re-check that or if need be, reformat.

That's what I thought as well, and other than the video (which wasn't on my old one) all the settings are the same. COuld it have something to do with the last iPod update?

Also, I've already tried doing a restore from the 2006-1-10 iPod Updater, but no dice. How would I reformat an iPod? Just go to disk utility and have it wipe it, and then do a software restore?

One other problem I noticed too. After I click menu and leave an artist, that artists name will still appear in the menu bar until I get to the song list for another artist. For instance, if I click menu to get out of my Hendrix collection and go to my Bob Dylan songs, I'll see Hendrix's name in the title bar and Dylan's songs on the screen. This is all VERY weird.

rather than re-ripping all of your music, try to restore (ie ERASE) the whole ipod. I don't balme you for not wanting to rerip but to restore, all you have to do it reload them onto the iPod from itunes.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if that is what the apple rep meant

I've already tried it, but no success. I called Apple TS again and talked to someone that spoke English and was better able to understand me. The guy tried to duplicate the problems on an iPod that he had with him and he said it sounded like hardwrae or software defect and told me to send it in to Apple.

I have a service request in right now, but I still can't help but think what would have caused both of these problems to occur.

the same thing is happening to me, obviously with different artists, but the same problem.

please post if you figure this out.

i assumed that the 1.1 update would solve my problem, but it didn't.

After MUCH searching throught the Apple message boards and sifting through various product specialists with Apple Tech Support, I think I've got an answer for anyone else who experiences this problem...

Despite what I was originally told, it is not a hardware defect, but rather it seems to be a bug in the 2006-1-10 iPod Updater that caused my menu bar not change. As with most Apple bugs, it seems to attack at random ... leavin git's victims helpless in its devestating wake. The iPod seems to not like it when you do not list an album for your songs. I investigated into this a little more and discovere, if only one album is listed under that artist, then that's when problems occur. It still won't list and "Unknown Album" like it did in the past, but if you go into iTunes and fill in an album name, it'll work just fine.

If anyone has anyquestions about what I did, or if my explanationneed clarification, please let me know, but for now, it appears that the iPod is fine and happy. (I just need to add album names for some 700 songs...)

me too... 23 down 725 to go... but for now, all of those songs missing an album title now have a simple 'space' as the album title.
