Test drive software - how is it time limited?

My iMac came with software that is 30 day time limited, including Office. Anyone know how the app knows when I've used up the trial? If it puts a file somewhere can I track it. I'm new to apple so I don't know the directories, but I believe with windows you can trace the install to see what happens.
