Easy way to change device for sound output?

Hi

I connected my stereo to my Mini from the headphone jack, and connected my headphones to a USB thing that can hook up headphones and a mic.

Is there an easier way to switch my sound output between the 'phones and the stereo without having to go into System Preferences every time?

Thank you and cheers

    Check out these 2 AppleScripts:

Running the scripts will switch between the two output options with a double click.

If you are interested, it could be rewritten as a Status item Menu like the Airport, Clock, Display items.

Sound Menu puts an item on your menu bar which allows you to switch between audio devices. It's free and it's a universal binary too (just for the record).

Thanks rminkler and pianoguy. Sorry about the delay in my response, I was away.

rminkler, I downloaded Sound Menu, it works great, thank you. However my USB thing from Plantronics does not work properly (I just responded to PianoGuy in another topic about this) and so Sound Menu at this moment lies unused on my Mac.

PianoGuy, thanks for the scripts. I double-clicked on the scripts, nothing seemed to happen. Sorry to be so dumb, I need to do some RTFM on AppleScripts to find out how to run the scripts and how to use your scripts.

Again, as I mentioned in the other topic PianoGuy, I suspect my Plantronics USB thing now, so I am back to my old setting of just using the headphone socket on the mini to plug my stereo in, so once I buy the Griffin Mic, I shall come back to this problem, and by then I should have RTFMmed enough to know how to actually use your scripts

    Thanks again you two.

The scripts simply automate the steps of opening the Sound Preferences Pane, selecting the appropriate device option from the menu and then quitting Preferences. There was an error in one of the scripts, that has been corrected. (If an option was removed, and the script was run to choose it, a receiver error occured. It now checks to see if the option is still present before selecting it)

If you double click the script you should see the Sound Preferences Pane open, the menu option select and then quit.

This is a screen cap of the script in action
