Unrecognized Folder on Desktop

Need help with this. I have a new Intel-Mac 17 inch for about a week. Yesterday, did a software update and downloaded the new Daylite beta 3.0. Also had a problem loading version 2.04 of Daylite, and an Adobe product, so sent a report to Apple.

This evening, I noticed a new folder on my desktop entitled "WHAT" (all caps). Inside the folder there are 85 items, including the following:

Need to know where this folder came from and why listing these files. Get Info list the folder as being created May 28, 2005. Any ideas?

Looks like the contents of your Library folder

That is your ~/Library/Preferences folder. It isn't clear whether the DayLite installer was misconfigured and accidently copied the folder, but that is a possibility. The May 2005 date is strange though.

Check the real ~/Library/Preferences folder in your home folder and see if it looks OK - check the Get Info modification date on some recent applications' plist files (e.g. com.apple.safari.plist).

Email the developer to see if anyone else has reported the problem.

    Moving to Genius Bar.

    Chris,

Any idea why it would suddenly appear on the desktop in a folder entitled "WHAT" and should I be able to delete this folder?

    Anyone have any ideas

If you want to try taking apart the installer for Daylite, we can see if we can find the script that moves the Preferences folder.

Control-click on the xxxxxx.pkg or xxxxxxx.mpkg file, choose "Show Package Contents", and then browse through the Contents folder looking for scripts named "preflight", "postflight", "installationcheck", etc., open them in TextEdit and post them here if they are in human-readable form.

Not sure how it would get there... if it did get copied there I have accidently renamed files on the desktop without knowing it so that could be why its called WHAT. I would do what was suggested above and check your ~/Library folder and look at modification dates to see if they current files.
