Probably this question has been asked before, but is there a way to shut down classic gracefully or just force quit?

You can stop it in the "Classic" section of System Preferences.

for an even more elegant solution, download <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=13421&db=mac"; target="_blank">Classic Spy</a>, which will allow you to start and stop Classic from the menubar, as well as giving you a visual cue as to whether or not classic is open.
