opening the console in doom3 (powerbook, 1.3)

didn't play doom3 for a while and now want to get in and finish it (cheating though, cos i'm not a serious gamer!
) but i've updated to version 1.3a and now don't seem to be able to open the console.
the published key combination is ctrl + opt + ~. since i have a powerbook i would imagine the combination would actually be ctril + opt + shift + ^ (the ~ is on the ^ key) but this doesn't work. also, NOT pressing shift doesn't work
i have also tried various random combination of keys but no job. does anyone know the key combination for a powerbook on version 1.3a?
