is my MacBook Pro defective???

My new MacBook Pro arived about a week ago. But I have had some concerns.

Hardward issues:

There is a high pitched buzzing sound coming from the top left of the keyboard. To my knowledge this is about where the processor should be. There is a high pitched sound all the time; sometimes louder, sometime quiter. On top of the high pitch sound there is frequent intermitent high pitched buzzing.

I took it in to the Apple Store. The Mac-Genius said this computer he has never heard that sound before and that I should insist to have a replacment sent and that I should fight them if they simply want to repair it.

I called Apple and they said that there was recently an article released that states that the intel archecture could warrant some some buzzing of in the area of the processor. So they said this is to some extent normal.

It is hard to image that this kind of buzzing is normal. I find it very erritating.

Yesterday, turning it on and left it alone for about 20 min. Within 10 mins of it running idal, a clunking/spinning sound (loud and low pitch) was now coming from the same place. (It almost sounded like a fan hitting something.) I can guess this sound is coming from the fan for the processor.

Cosmetic issues:

- there was some grime on the trackpad when it arived. I didn't think much of it and cleaned it off

- one and only one of the screws around the perimeter of the is not completely flush with the case. It sticks out far enough for my finger to catch on it.

- I touched my finger to express slot and a blue plastic stip half-way popped out (it appears to be about the size of the express slot flap). The Mac-Genius also said he as never seen that before and said not touch it so that Apple can see that is how it arived to me.

I don't heard anyone else complain about the MBP so I don't know if these things are normal or not.

Apple has now said that "Apparently the cosmetic imperfections you're seeing on your computer are beyond what are normally acceptable and do warrant a repair."

But Apple said that they will look at the buzzing sound but if it they don't find it to be very loud then they will consider the buzzing to be normal.

There's been a ton of discussion about the buzzing noise on Apple's discussion boards. See also this thread here. Bottom line is that it's related to the power-saving features of the processor, it's universal (even happens on non-Apple laptops), but there are simple things you can do to silence it.

We apple users expect nothing less than perfection . My dell laptop makes all kinds of strange sounds at random times, but if my powerbook does anything I'm on the phone with applecare  . I am just kidding, I'm not that drastic, I just love how we all expect perfection, come on, it's an apple, perfection should be achievable!

Sounds like a machine that's already been repaired to me. Perhaps it failed the QA at the factory and someone had to take it to bits again in order to fix the problem.

There's a good chance that the new machine you receive won't be a new machine at all, but rather another ex-repair.

It's annoying that you pay full whack and end up with a scratched/jalopy at the end of the day.

It happened to me with my 30" Cinema Display...

There was clearly smudges on my iSight lense... wtf Apple.

I've only used my MBP for 15 minutes tops, so I have no idea if it's problematic or not. The demo i've been playing with recently has a screen defect though, a splotchy area in the right third and top quarter of the screen, the lcd is incredibly bright and almost white there.

dance- everyone is getting this loud pitched noise. if you constantly hear it, its prob because the other cpu is just sittting there. you must not do much with the laptop?

anyways, you can open the widget (mirror) and leave it open or close it. this helps me, the pitch is instantly gone, and usually doesn't come back for hours.

if you're using heavy apps that run both cores you wont hear it.

that rewinding noise-sounds like an electronic "moo" sound followed by a clunk?

some say its the fan, its not. it is the superdrive adjusting itself, you can also hear it sometimes if you put in a scratched cd and the track isn't pickng up.

Just curious, where was the machine built? It should say so at the bottom of the computer or on the box
