I'm a PC user that is tired of reformating and reloading software every 6 months. My question is when I buy a new iMac is getting a extented warrenty AppleCare necessary?
I'm jsut going to used the computer for home only no business.
I'd get it on an Apple laptop or iMac -- I have it on my Powerbook -- but I don't see it as overly necessary for a desktop model like the Power Macs or Mac mini.
If you call tech support a lot, though, it might be worth your while.
I recommend Applecare ..expecially on the iMac because you have an integrated LCD which is covered as well.
Not only is your computer covered for the full 3yrs but you also have full phone support which helps (standard phone support is 90 days)
I'm buying Applecare for my Mac mini next week because I like the guarantee that I'll be sheilded from repair costs for 3yrs. That means I can leave my system running 24x7 and have no worries.

I buying applecare for this intel iMac, this is my second iMac.
It comes in handy any time your stuck you can just call them a they halp you get on the smooth again!
It also came in handy when my stupid nieces knocked my comp over!
AppleCare on portables is a must. It's probably a good idea for desktops as well but I think it's more likely a PowerBook would go than a PowerMac.
Dealing with AppleCare a few years ago was a chore, but in the end I got my PowerBook G3 replaced with a PowerBook G4. It too, had AppleCare, unfortunately it ran out about 2-3 weeks ago. Not before I sent it in for some last minute repairs though (stuff like the AC Adapter, the SuperDrive stopped burning CD-Rs, and a battery issue).
AppleCare, in my experience, has been worth it. There's no rush in getting it though, you have a year to change your mind.
