G5 will not mount blank DVDs

OK, here's the problem. I insert a blank DVD-R (single layer, write once, 4 speed) and it waits about 10 seconds then ejects it again. Nothing appears on the screen or in the console logs.

I've tried every setting in the CDs and DVDs prefpane. I've tried repairing the main hard drive. The disks I'm using work in my powerbook, and also the G5 can read CDs and DVDs, and write CDs fine. I've tried putting a cleaning disk through it. I've tried getting it to mount straight into Disk Utility (it won't).

I'm now out of ideas. Anyone have any?

PS: G5 dual core 2ghz with dual layer superdrive.

You're not using +R's are you???

Some SuperDrives (like mine) only support -R... and others support both.

    Good point.

Someone else had the same problem and he had to switch to a different brand.

Well, it never hurts to reset the firmware.

Nope. They're -Rs. My drive claims to support +Rs anyhow

These are a brand I've used before, so I doubt it's that either.

How do I reset the firmware?

Boot into Open Firmware by holding down command-option-O-F on boot.

then type the following two commands at the prompt and hit return after each:

    reset-nvram

    reset-all

The machine will reboot. Just for good measure you could then hold down command-option-P-R during the boot until you hear the startup chime twice. This clears the Parameter RAM.

Voodoo, but I can't think of anything else to try except a different brand disk or to go to Apple's Discussion site (http://discussions.info.apple.com)

I might try the different brand thing after all...

I just tried mounting one of the new disks, which I burnt on my laptop. It does not mount. (This is a disk burnt as a video DVD.) However, other video DVDs do mount, even DVD-Rs.

It just seems odd that this brand will work in my laptop and not the desktop.
