Seriously, though, Mac OS 9 does support 256 character names, but Apple had to break the support for it because *all* apps would have had to be rewritten to take advantage of it. That's the same reason there are still some carbon apps in Mac OS X (like Microsoft Office and Stuffit) that are limited to 32 character names; the developers are either to lazy or too incompetent to update their code to properly use the new filesystem calls.
