Does OS X corrupt error sounds?

On pretty much every version of OS X, I eventually notice my error sound gets corrupted. When this happens, I get a hideous noise when I reach an error and sometimes it is an extremely loud buzz.

When I check the sound file, sure enough, the file has been changed and yet the modification date hasn't and the file is in the system folder so doesn't have write permissions by me.

Here is my funk sound file for example:

You need to click free then input some code to download the file. Compare it to your own funk file found in /System/Library/Sounds.

The same thing happened on my ibook and now it happened on my Mac Mini. No other sound in my machine has been distorted, only the error sounds mess up.

If I press a key to repeatedly get an error, the error sounds are very erratic. Instead of a constant stream of repeating sounds, I get clicks, silences, errors and once in a while an insanely loud buzz (like there is a short circuit or something).

So far, I've gone through pop, funk, tink and bottle, all they all sound corrupted although funk seems to be the only one that also sounds corrupt when played in quicktime. So now I'm on morse and I'll see how long that lasts.
