What exactly is apple's firmware updating? Is it updating the rom that's on the board?



any opinions of past upgrading experiences?

    the b&w g3 firmware update that exed out 3rd party zif upgrades sucked.

    Yes, it updates the flash ROM on the motherboard.

    It has solved some problems for me in the past. For example a bug that made my G3 400 crash (not starting again) after sleep mode...

    Yes, it updates a flash rom on the motherboard. These updates can often fix bugs or improve performance, but they haven't done one in a while, so I'm guessing they have things as good as they are likely to get them on the current mobo architecture.



    there was the g4 upgrade block that was put into one firmware upgrade, so I guess there can be some negative side effects as well, but mostly there is a good reason for the upgrades.
