UNIX folders show up in the Finder? Why?

My Mac is showing the BSD UNIX folders in the Finder. Folders like /tmp, /etc, and /var (symlinks) are showing up in the Finder when normally they are hidden.

How can I fix this? Is there a pref I can kill, or a command I can run to "re-hide" them? There must be some sort of Finder "invisible" attribute I can set, right?

are you by chance using a little app called tinker-tool? If so, it has a n option to "show" hidden files/ folders, and there is an option to turn that off in the app. If not, then I am at a loss on how you can do this, maybe you booted up in safe mode or something...
