Safari having problems-Firefox works better

Hi all, I am using MacOSX 10.3.9, all updates applied.

Safari has been working like ass lately. Most times I have to click 'refresh' to get a page to load.

I wanted to make sure the problem wasn't my connection so i downloaded Firefox and it works fine. No problems connecting and its faster than safari.

Is anyone else having these problems? I would prefer to use Safari, but it looks like I have no choice for now but to use Firefox.

Hmmm ... no problems here. Try dumping the .plist file for Safari. Also, go into your system prefs and make sure you're not trying to run through any proxies or something like that. I had a problem a year ago where Safari and Firefox would only take me to one website, and somehow a proxy got set in my system prefs ... unchecking it did the trick though.

Safari also has the reset option, but it'll dump all of your bookmarks and stuff, so you could try that, but make sure you save the necessary pref files if you decide to do that.

Hope that at least gets you started let me know how it goes.

Have you del the cache at all? Also you might want to delete the favicons (the little graphics that get loaded in the webaddress bar) try this little app called SafariSpeed , it deletes those little graphics that sometimes cause slow loading. its quite handy. Im using it right now.

How do I dump the .plist? Where is it found?

I deleted the cache and I used YASU to delete the favocons. Neither helped.

OK, I dumped the plist. I couldnt find it anywhere so i just used the find file and typed it in. Then I trashed it.

So far it seems to be working somewhat better, but I would still say firefox is faster. So far, though, I havent had to hit refresh to load any pages.

Thanks for the help, lets see if it stays good. I checked the proxies and none are checked.

Give Camino a try. It's as fast as Firefox, but it provides an Aqua interface.

Sorry I didn't specify where it was ... for future reference this file resides in User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist

Someone mentioned Camino, I've played with it a little bit ... it's a nice little browser.

Again, you may try resetting safari, but you'd have to find a way to save your bookmarks and I'm not QUITE sure how you'd do this ... maybe someone else here does though???

I tried Camino and wasn't impressed. Firefox seems to work better.

When I downloaded Firefox a while ago, I did speed tests! I tested 20 different websites 20 times each with both Firefox and Safari. (took about 1 hour)

Conclusion Safari is faster and more consistant at being faster! Sometimes Firefox would pause looking for a website, and eventually find it. This never happened with Safari! I trashed Firefox, and still use Safari. No amount of disscussion or persuasion could get me to switch to Firefox. I tried it, and it's not as reliable, secure or as fast as Safari.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

well, I wish that were the case with me. I do find safari better at loading some pages, but the majority seem to load faster and more accurately with firefox.

Safari was working pretty good after deleting the plist yesterday but its starting to require me to refresh pages again today. Quite frustrating.
