Im looking at buying a MacBook Pro but I want to run the actual consumer version that comes with Leopard. If I buy one now with the older OS is there an upgrade fee to get to Leopard, or is it just a patch that you download for free? If it costs money Ill probably wait till Leopard comes standard when it ships. Btw does anyone know or have any guesses as to when the consumer version will be available? Also, do they determine the newer versions of OS X by taking actual wild cats placing them in a cage and whichever one comes out alive it becomes the next version? Just wondering.

All of the recent major OS updates have had a price tag on them ($129), so at a guess that's what Leopard is going to cost, but there's no official word yet. Also, usually if you buy a new Mac in the month or so immediately prior to the release, you can get an update disc for $10 or something, but otherwise you pay the full amount.

As for when 10.5 Leopard is due, we don't know. The last dates Apple mentioned were "late 2006 or early 2007". Now that we know they won't even be showing it to developers until August, it looks likely it will be towards the end of that date range.

BTW, I'm not sure what you meant by "consumer version" but with OSX there is no 'home'and 'pro' version like Windows (or media centre or whatever else) - we all get the pro version! The only separate version is for servers.

While there is no consumer version of OS X there are education prices if you have a child in elementary school or college - or if you are in school or working in a school system. My wife is in a school system and I get OS X Family Pack at an excellent price.

With the OS X discounts available I wouldn't put off buying a Mac. Go for what you want now and then move to Leopard after it has been out a short while. Might as well be enjoying a Mac between now and whenever Leopard is released!
