Computers dial up ISP's. Is there a way for a computer to dial up other phone numbers?

For example, address book phone numbers.

Which isn't a hardware solution, however, so it's a bit more difficult for people to call your computer from a phone.

I'd love it if there was an app to use your modem to transmit phone audio, but the only one available offered kernel panics and other niceties, so no.

Interesting, I've heard of Skype but I never really knew what it was.

One of the few times I didn?t make myself clear and something positive came out of it. Skype will save me a bundle on my numerous phone calls to my out-of-town daughters. Greeeeeaarate!

However, I originally meant: can a computer dial numbers from an address book (like it does to dial up an ISP)? Just POTS.
