    Just a wild shot:

Maybe you are working with a somewhat currupted Soundfile.

(Yes Soundfiles can get broken and this is a pretty nasty thing.)

Happend to me once. In order to trace the culprit back you

have to delete step my step the last Soundfiles you have

    imported previously. Perhaps that helps.

I just read over your post again. Do i assume correctly, that you have

started an all new Garageband Project and this hanging issue continues

even with just one track inside an new project?

Does this "hanging issue" happen on all new GB Projects

you are creating OR does this happen to *some* projects

and some other projects remain *clean* and intact?

If this problem happens to ALL your projects, than

i guess there is something wrong within your GB loop

library. Btw did you copy some 3rd partie loops

into your loop library lately? Maybe there you have

to trace back the culprit. In this case i would put them

away again. And see what happens.

Well, it seems to be a li'l bit convoluted so far.

It is difficult to find out what is going wrong

from remote. Each case is a bit different.

    Some questions:

    1. Any 3rd party hardware (HD's, card readers etc.) connected

    while operating GB?

    2. Do you have enough HD space left? For example

if your internal HD is, say, 30 GB you should have left

3-4 GB at least to let Mac OS X AND GB work properly.

    This is *very* important.

Anyway, this is what i'd do:

    0. look, if i had enough HD space

    1. repair permissions (you did already)

    2. zap the cache (you did already)

    3. trash the GB prefs (give it a try)

    4. create a new user and see what happens within GB

If GB happens to be strange within a new User account you'll

know at least, that the problem is a systemwide problem. ;-)

    5. trash all GB related files (particularily the loops)

and reinstall GB (as a last resort)

    perhaps that helps

    good luck

    EDIT PS:

    1. Actually, what does "activity monitor.app" tell you while

    running GB?

    2. Does "console.app" tell you something of value?

Both of these apps you'll find in the "Utilities" folder which you'll find

in the main App folder. Sure you know that already.

Additionally you can launch terminal.app, type in "top". hit enter.

Afterward you can monitor all system activities all the time.

If something conspicuous is going on, while you are working

within GB, you will see instantly. Let us know...

80 gig internal Drive... with 40 gigs available.

Usb lacie drive with 250 gigs with 210 gigs available.

The lacie is fast btw for those shoppin,I use it for Imovie vids and garage band and soon it will house my growing itunes library

maudio 410 firewire interface installed. yeah i may just uninstall garageband because my files are on the external drive so it would be easy.

Question how do i clean and repair perms on on the external drive it came with a software tool but the tool is for uggg OS 9,the disk utilty says it can only repair those systems with os x installed?

Well, no Disk space issue so far.

Short answer, you can't AND there is no need for.

Maybe there is *some* (although very unlikely) conflict

    between the two Firewire devices.

    1. Try GB without the M-Audio device.

    2. Copy all your GB Projects (or at least one of them)

onto the internal HD and continue to work with internally stored GB project.

Unplug the FW HD, in order to see, if that changes something.

Also, i've got that hunch, that it might have something to do with the

automatic sleep function of the external HD.

Examine your "Power saving settings" and make sure the

option "put all HD to sleep, if possible" is not marked.

    maybe...

    Tried Everything you guys suggested....

one thing thats rather odd though is the system resource manager that shows how much of the cpu is being used for a particular app is showing garage band at max full on!!!!!!! even when playing back one track. or just it running without doing anything.

    no other program does that.

iphoto started stuttering and doing the same thing but the last update cured it...... should i try uninstalling garage band? then re installing garage band?some of the more advanced features in ilife are only available in tiger and i have panther should i be running tiger? dumb question i know seeing as how leopard is just around the corner........... thanks for the help guys.
