I assume the Apple Remote receiver cannot be used for IRDA syncing, etc... right?
Actually if you are talking abotu the receiver on the computer, then I think it can. I just found this preference yesterday and haven't had time to mess with it. Go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Security and look at the bottom. I have attached a screenshot. So from my guessing since you can unpair a remote, any remote will work the the Apple reciever. If that's what you meant by receiver. Instead of having to use the apple remote.
I think it means any available Macbook or iMac remote, but maybe.
No you are right. Upon further searching, it will allow you to sync your front row enabled mac with only one apple remote, so if you are in an area with more then one remote, they won't interfere. I found that out yesterday and just had some hope but oh well. Sorry if I was misleading, but I did say guessing
