Test environment advice needed

What are the smallest partition sizes I can install/run 10.3.0 and 10.4.x? Other than iTunes and Delocalizer the only apps that will get installed are ones I am testing. I will be using an external 40GB drive that I also use for backup which is why I want to keep partitions to a minimum.
