Airport sucks in OS X?

I recently bought a macbook and have been taking it everywhere with me.

I have encountered joining a few wireless networks.

One with 128-bit wep key that I kept getting a self assigned IP address and others airport just refuses to connect saying "Airport accounted an error while trying to connect" over and over again.

And sometimes my connection just stops working, but I have the same IP aggress....

Any ideas?

The OS will self assign an IP if it cannot connect to a network. Usually it is a signal strength or authentication issue. No feedback when authentication is incorrect, just no access to the network and eventually a self assigned IP.

Check you settings under Network -- airport. click the Options... button and check your settings here. These settings could be preventing your from connecting automatically.

Another thing to try is to create a new Location (say "Mobile" and set up Airport as the only connection type). See if a new location helps.

hmm, airport / wireless on os x rules. zero config for me, everywhere i go it either connects flawlessly (i've connected before) or it asks me if i'd like to connect. and even better, my wireless range is incredible on the macbook.

I'm able to connect in most places, but a few places (such as my friends apartment) I have troubles. It either just gives me a self assigned IP address or gives me the error.

If anyone watches digg nation I think Kevin Rose has the same problem sometimes 'cause Alex always rips on him.
