July 3, 2006 - When Apple unveils its Power Mac G5 replacement at its Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) next month, the top-of-the-line computer will sport a new enclosure, Think Secret has confirmed.
While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer's case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot. While Apple has traditionally matched new processors with new enclosures? as it did with the PowerBook G4, iMac G4, and Power Mac G5?the company surprised some observes when it debuted the Core Duo-equipped MacBook Pro in January clad in the alumnium skin of the last PowerBook G4. Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top.
Meanwhile, sources say that a new enclosure is waiting for the MacBook Pro and will be released when that system adopts Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo processor. The desktop Core 2 Duo, code-named Conroe, is slated for release later this month, but the mobile variety, code-named Merom, is not expected until the Fall. Accordingly, new MacBook Pro systems are not expected at WWDC, although a bump at the high-end to the recently announced 2.33GHz Core Duo processor is possible.
Sources remain divided regarding when the new Intel-based Xserve will be announced, with some expecting it ahead of WWDC and others at the conference itself. Last week, Think Secret sources citing several pieces of evidence suggested an announcement could arrive very soon. Apple is said to already be employing the new Xserves, which are powered by Intel's Dual-Core Xeon processor (code-named Woodcrest), and it is believed final testing of the systems is wrapping up.

I'd much rather have read something like "same case as the PowerMac G5 and Conroe across the board"...that would have been more assuring from TS.

Crap...that almost assuredly means no case revision. In the past year or two, you could pretty much read something off of TS and the exact opposite of what was read would come true.

Sad isn't it?
They nailed a lot of stuff in the years before.
The only "rumor"site left that is more or less accurate is AppleInsider.
Well the bright side is we now don't really know what's coming.
If Apple redesigns the MBP I'd like them to add a docking station port because I love docking my HP laptop in one click.
I'd like to see a slightly thicker case with better cooling. No burnt laps please.
I'd like to see a Mac Pro case that is smaller. Small enough to be racked if the need arises.
I'd like to see a hot swap drive bay that ties into the Apple Media Centre STB coming eventually <WAG ..snicker>

I really hope TS is wrong about the Merom MBPs not coming out until the fall, and not being unveiled at WWDC. Given that the meroms are coming out in August, WWDC would be a great place to showcase a new MBP, and possibly offer pre-orders. Also, since Apple's competitors will likely unveil merom notebooks directly following its release, it wouldn't make sense for apple to wait a month or two to catch up.

Yeah, no kidding!
I don't think the new MacBook Pro will employ any sort of magnetic latch as Apple would have move the optical drive to the side of the computer like the MacBook. I know a lot of people that love their PowerBooks or MPBs find the front-loading optical drive an attractive and convenient feature.

They'll find a way. MacBook Pro will go magnetic latch, i'd bet my life on it. If people are worried that the magnets will strain/bend the display, especially on the 17". Apple could put two magnets near the middle of the display, and two smaller/ligher ones on the outside of the display. The outer ones would keep the display nice and flush, and the centre one would keep the lid closed.

TS's analysis is based on false facts. In going from the PPC 604 to the G3, there was no change in basic case design. The change came later with the blue & white G3. The G4 brought fourth a change in the color of the plastics, but not basic design. The iMac started life with the G3. It went through the CRT to LCD transition with the G3. However, CRT to LCD transition changed the iMac case to the lampshade design. The lampshade remained when the iMac transitioned to the G4. The only examples of significant case redesigns coinciding with processor changes were the transitions to the G5. These changes were necessary accomodate the heat produced by the G5. There was also a basic case redesign when the PowerBook transitioned from the G3 to the G4.

There was no TFT iMac G3, or a lampshade iMac G3.
The iMac G4 introduced the TFT, and the lamp design.

Same...if Apple doesn't readjust to Intel's schedule, Apple will have to live with only selling 4-5 million Macs a year. Sadly, I bet that's the plan.
I'm not asking for Apple to gain 40% market share...I want them to gain about 10 and then maintain *that*. Kinda sucks to be hovering between 2-4%.

If there's a Conroe in the low-end model ($2000) Apple will look slow. If there's a Conroe in the $2500 model, Apple will look totally out-of-touch. I can see a low-end Conroe at $2000. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but this is Apple. But two Conroes? That's insane.

I agree. Maybe if the fastest Conroe was in the $2k model, that might be acceptable, though I wouldn't be surprised to see a competitor with a sub-$1k Conroe-based workstation, which would make Apple look greedy.

The fastest Conroe (2.67 GHz) only slightly less than 2x2.0 Woodcrests ($660 vs. $530). With the motherboard/RAM difference, that's almost a sure-shot that there'll be no Conroes.
