A utility to hide/modify the menubar?

I've been wondering recently about being able to change the most indelable hallmark of the Mac OS desktop, the menubar. That's the one thing that never disappears, save for in fullscreen games and slideshows, and I'd like to be able to have it spring out on command a la the Dock and be hidden the rest of the time, since I'm heavy on keyboard shortcuts and really don't need it that much. Plus, I'm kind of afraid of the burn-in that this fixture of the interface has on a CRT screen.

Overall I just want a little bit more control over the menubar; are there any good little apps to do this with?

Menushade will darken or make the menubar transparent.

There's another app in the works, too, but hasn't been released.

That's pretty much what I was looking for, very cool. What's the other app?

Wow, the Preference Pane menu seems so incredibly obvious now.

Go to your Apple menu. There's a System Preferences... item that launches the preferences app. Instead, there was a sub-menu named System Preferences that had all the prefs listed.

Christ, what's the importance of menufela then?

Edit: Does menufela hide it, or just black it out? With his desktop, it's really tough to tell...

    Ah, it does. Cool!
