ichat & icq in osx! will it ever happen?

in Mac Software edited January 2014
So do you think anything will ever come of this?

How long would it take?

Considering iChat is more than just another AIM client, I don't know how likely it is that iChat will support other IM networks.

However, if Apple struck up similar deals with ICQ, Yahoo!, etc. as they have done with AOL for iChat, then I could see iChat supporting multiple IM systems.

I think this has been mentioned before, but since AIM and ICQ are both owned by Time Warner, will there soon be a merger of the two? It seems a waste of resources to focus on separate chat clients.

AOL has been talking about having one client to work with AIM users and ICQ Users it would be called AIM still but you would be able to communicate with ICQ users also, much like trillian. I though AOL was supposed to have rolled this out already at least that is what I heard on TV over a year ago.

hopefully the ichat framework/api allows for pluggable protocols. if thye do, and its "open", then it shouldnt be long before people add icq, msn, etc support.

I would certainly love this iChat if it would support different IM protocols, but if not, I'm sticking to Proteus.

This probably means that iChat will get the functionality for free (an update may be required).

There is a blurb about it on macminute.com also. Hopefully apple will update ichat as soon as AIM is updated

BTW my iMac should be here tomorrow at 4:30, I'm about to go nuts. I keep seeing this chocolate milk commercial where the guy mails the drink to himself and the package gets dropped, kicked and shook around like crazy. Then I get this picture in my head of this big chalkboard with various things listed and a coulmn nect to it that says # of bounces and then it says imac - 2 <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

or you just download fire, get your ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber in one, for free, with no stupid smiley icons.

now that's what i'm talkin' about!

There's a similar article over at <a href="http://theregister.co.uk/content/6/27840.html"; target="_blank">The Register</a>, although they note that the iChat/AIM tie-in is brought about by putting a client on the AIM network, rather than a merging of protocols.
